1. The Odessa Meteor Crater

Odessa boasts one of the three most significant craters in Texas. The 550 feet wide Odessa Meteor Crater, one of the country’s most prominent craters, was formed between 20,000 to 50,000 years ago when a barrage of meteors hit the earth approximately 10 miles west of town.

The Odessa Meteor Crater and the museum that displays a collection of large meteorites is at 3100 Meteor Crater Road in Odessa and is open daily throughout the year from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

2. I-20 Wildlife Preserve

Take a 22.6-mile drive to Midland for beautiful views from the 24-foot observation tower in the I-20 Wildlife Preserve at 2201 South Midland Drive. Enjoy the spectacular views over the preserve’s 100-acre riparian forest, the 86-acre lake, wetlands, and prairie grasslands.

The wild natural habitat attracts an array of bird, animal, and aquatic life that can be observed along the boardwalk and on the trails that meander through the preserve. The I-20 Wildlife Preserve is open Tuesday to Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and entry is free.

3. The Sibley Nature Center

The Sibley Nature Center is also in Midland at 1307 East Wadley, where you can enjoy the scenery of the rugged terrain on the trails. See blooming flowers in this beautiful natural area and keep your eyes peeled for indigenous wildlife along the way. You can also bring your leashed four-legged friend along on your hike. The Sibley Nature Center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. free of charge.

4. Monahans Sandhills State Park

Head 31 miles down the road from Odessa to Monahans for sweeping views of the majestic dunes that cover the 3,840-acre Monahans Sandhills State Park. The park covers only a tiny portion of the dunes that extend approximately 200 miles westward and north into New Mexico. Some dunes still grow and change shape when the prevailing winds blow and are up to 70 feet high, but most are stabilized by plant growth.

Hit the marked trails hiking and horseback for magnificent views of the soft, white dunes and go on an exhilarating ride on a sand toboggan or disk and sand surf down the dunes. Monahans Sandhills State Park is open daily between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m.
