Established in 1936 and managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Big Spring State Park features a group pavilion, plenty of hiking and biking trails, picnic tables, and a playground. If you have some extra time, make sure to explore the nearby town of Big Spring as well, walk around its historic downtown, and check out its small coffee shops and antique stores.



2. Monahans Sandhills State Park

Offering a truly unique landscape of rolling sand dunes, Monahans Sandhills State Park is another fantastic destination you can easily drive to from downtown Odessa. Located just 30 miles southwest of the city center, this state park can be reached in approximately half an hour by car via route I-20. This public recreation area opened to the public in 1957 and covers more than 3,800 acres.

Although simply walking around and checking out the sand dunes is certainly encouraged, this state park offers visitors plenty of fun activities. Rent a sand disk at the park’s headquarters and slide down the dunes, learn about the local wildlife at the Dunagan Visitor Center, or stay overnight at one of the 26 campsites with running water and electricity.



3. Davis Mountains State Park

Located approximately 150 miles southwest of Odessa, Davis Mountains State Park is the perfect destination for a scenic drive from the West Texas plains to the mountainous terrain of the Davis Mountains. Encompassing approximately 2,700 acres, this state park was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and features breathtaking scenery, excellent opportunities for wildlife watching, and plenty of picnic spots.
