Sell Us Your Vehicle!

Mar 18, 2022

It’s a legal requirement to register your car in Texas that you have a car inspection once a year. The Texas Department of Public Safety provides the checklist. This inspection checks and confirms that your vehicle is safe to drive in the state. All inspections must be carried out at an approved testing venue, and your Kia dealer in Odessa can inspect for you.

What You Need to Bring With You

When you arrive for the inspection, you’ll need to bring your driver’s license, a method of payment, and your insurance documentation. Your id must have your photo and must be current. Payment options include cash, credit card, and debit card.

What Is Inspected

Insurance Documentation

Your insurance is examined to confirm that your car is insured, and your current registration card and proof of insurance are confirmed. Full insurance coverage is required. If you have limited insurance coverage, the policy has to be with a Texas insurance company.

Lights

Your car’s lights are checked to make sure that they are all in good working order. Your turn signal lights, tail lights, and stop lights are examined to make sure they’re working properly. Their covers are also checked to they’re undamaged and unobscured, and to see that the lights are visible. Your headlights are also checked to see that they can use both high and low beams. Rear red reflectors need to be in place, and your license plate lights need to be visible and working.

Exhaust System

Your exhaust system, including the catalytic converter, is thoroughly examined and tested to confirm that it’s working correctly. Our county, Ector, doesn’t require emissions testing, so we don’t perform that step.

Gas Cap

The gas cap is examined to make sure that it fits tightly and that it’s completely sealed.

Window Tinting

Window tinting on cars manufactured since 1988 is restricted. If your car has tinted windows, it’s important to bring proof of a medical exemption to pass your car on this step.

Operations

Your steering, brakes and braking system, seat belts, wheels, and tires are all carefully examined. All of these items must be in good condition and functioning properly. They’re essential for the safety of you, your passengers, and other drivers.

Visibility

The windshield, mirrors, windshield wipers, and your horn are all tested to make sure they’re working. This ensures that you have good, unrestricted visibility and that other drivers can easily see and hear you.

Identification Numbers

Your engine number, VIN, and serial numbers are all checked and confirmed against your documentation.

What If I Don’t Pass?

If your car doesn’t pass the inspection, we give you a printout of the investigation report together with the repairs that need to be made. You can book a re-test for up to two weeks after the original inspection, which allows time for us to fix the issues for you.
