Here in Texas, we have our home-grown Tex-Mex style of cooking, but we also like good Mexican food. There are many similarities between the two cuisines, and if we have a taste for something different we’ll usually choose Mexican rather than Italian, Greek, or Chinese. We have many different types of Mexican restaurants in Odessa, TX, and this is our guide to some of the best Mexican food in town.

Mamasita’s Mexican Grill

Mamasita’s opened in 2007 and serves authentic Mexican food. Its owned and operated by a husband and wife team, and the restaurant looks exactly like a high-class Mexican restaurant south of the border. Little touches like bowls of pork rinds and tortilla chips with dips on the table give a homely and authentic feel. While you snack on the chips, they give you plenty of time to peruse their extensive menu.

One of our favorites is tacos al cabon, with chopped beef fajita, pico de Gallo, charro beans, cilantro, and rice. We also recommend the matonsote with fresh oysters, shrimp, octopus, and fish in a spicy sauce with onions, cucumber, cilantro, and avocado. For a sweet ending to your meal, be sure to save some space for their amazing chocolate lava cake Mamasita’ can be found at 4241 Maple Avenue.

La Bodega Mexican Restaurant & Bar

La Bodega has been a staple part of Odessa, TX, since 1972. They have an extensive menu, covering enchiladas, nachos, burritos, and quesidallia. As an authentic Mexican restaurant, they offer you varying degrees of heat when you order your meal. As a warning, their hot food is hot and spicy. Seafood isn’t forgotten, as they have shrimp and fish taquitos, fish tostadas, and other tasty offerings.

We like their taco plate with flour tortillas, soft corn tacos, or crispy tacos filled with shredded chicken or ground beef, lettuce, tomato, and cheese, with rice and beans on the side. They also have a simpler menu for kids and eight different sweet desserts. We like the cheesecake chimi with whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, cinnamon, and chocolate or caramel sauce. La Bodega is located at 1024 E 7th Street.

Veva’s Cocina

Veva’s is family-owned and has become a firm local favorite for its use of the freshest local ingredients. The quality is excellent, and they are known for Mexican street food. The owner learned to cook from her grandmother, and has incorporated many of these family secrets into their menu. They have both breakfast and regular burritos, breakfast bowls, enchiladas, and some of the best nachos in the area.

Veva’s also has drive-through and take-out options if you don’t have time to sit and savor the authentic atmosphere. The restaurant is located at 4020 Faudree Road Ste C.
